Dog Dental Care

One of the most important things you can do for your dog's health is to make sure that he has good dental care.  While it wasn't that long ago that no one even considered brushing their dogs teeth, today we know that having unhealthy teeth and gums leads not only to tooth loss but also to other problems with your dog's health.

When bacteria is allowed to build up in your dog's mouth, it doesn't just stay in the mouth it goes throughout your dog's entire system affecting all his vital organs and causing illness.  Luckily this can all be prevented easily by yearly dental care at the vet as well as a weekly or biweekly home toothbrushing regimen.

Funny as it may sound, they do make toothbrushes specifically for dogs.  These toothbrushes actually look a lot like human toothbrushes but they are angled a little bit differently to allow you to get inside the dog's mouth easily. 

But that's just one kind of toothbrush, there's another kind that is like a rubber tip that fits on the end of your finger and has rubber "bristles".  With this type of brush you stick your whole finger in the dog's mouth and gently rub all around the teeth and gums. 

The type of toothbrush you use on your dog is largely a matter of personal choice between you and the dog so you might have to experiment with each type to see which works best.

Of course, you can't just use any toothpaste when brushing your dogs teeth - you need to use a toothpaste that is specially formulated for dogs.  These actually come in flavors that dogs like such as chicken and you may even find that your dog likes to eat the toothpaste just as a treat! But in addition to tasting good they are also specifically formulated with enzymes that help take care of the bacteria that develops and a dog's mouth.

Needless to say, if you've never brushed your dogs teeth before he's probably not going to be too happy about having either your finger or a brush stuck in his mouth.  Once again, you need to approach this with patience. 

Try introducing your dog to the toothpaste first - chances are he'll love it! Then after a few weeks of giving him just the toothpaste at a certain time each day, try putting it on the toothbrush.  Once he gets used to that, now you can start trying to put the toothbrush into his mouth.  Eventually you can move on to actually brushing the teeth and if you introduce your dog to it in this manner, he may accept it and not complain too much.

You probably don't have to brush your dogs teeth every day and you can also give him doggy dental treats that help with the cleaning.  Depending on how bad your dogs teeth get (some dogs are worse than others) you might want to try brushing the teeth once or twice a week.

Of course, your vet will examine your dogs teeth at his yearly checkup and may even recommended dental scaling which is much like a teeth cleaning that we get.  However, I implore you not to depend solely on your vet for this - if you make it a habit to brush your dogs teeth, they will be clean all the time and you may be able to avoid the dental scaling altogether.  Not only that but clean teeth will make your dogs breath smell better and will be much healthier for him over all.
