Dog Ear Care

Dogs can easily get ear affections, but if you give your dog some basic ear maintenance every so often you will be able to ward off a painful infection and avoid a trip to the vet.  Your dog's ears are quite different from human ears and water getting trapped inside can cause bacteria and fungus to grow as there is not a lot of air circulation due to the shape of the ears.  This is especially true if your dog has floppy ears.

Ear mites can be another problem that dogs have.  These microscopic mites like to live in the ear canal where they feed on skin and can be quite itchy for your dog.  Being sure that you check your dog's ears every so often will alert you to any problems and you will be able to get treatment before the problem becomes too uncomfortable for your pet.

When you want to do is take your dog's ear and lift the flap so that you can see the inside of the ear.  Remove any wax build up or debris that you see there, but be careful not to go into the canal itself - just stay right in the outer ear and never go in more than 1/2".  Having said that, you should look into the dogs ear and if you see any foreign matter or heavy wax buildup you might want to take him to the vet.

You can buy some dog ear cleaning solution and wet a cotton ball with it then use the cotton ball to swab out the dogs ear.  This will help clean the ear canal as well as soothe any irritated skin.  Make sure that you don't get any water or to access cleaning solution into your dogs ears as this can cause more harm than good!

Checking your dogs ears every six months or so in between vet appointments can be a good way to ensure good dog ear  health and ward off any major problems.
