Dog Eye Care

In order to keep your dog healthy, you also want to make sure that you take good care of their eyes.  For many breeds there is actually nothing that you need to do other than make sure their eyes don't get damaged.  But for other breeds, regular cleaning around the tear ducts is a must.  Otherwise, protein deposits can build up into a big gunky mess which can cause problems for your dog.

If you dog tends to get a lot of buildup around the eyes, you want to make sure to take care of this area regularly - once or twice a week depending on how severe the buildup can get.  The key here is not to let it get out of hand, so you want to keep on top of it by keeping your dogs eye area clean all the time.  If you let the buildup get away from you, it will become nearly impossible to remove and you have to take your dog to the vet or groomer.

You can buy solutions and eye pads that will help remove the tear stains and the buildup near your dogs eyes.  You want to be very careful, however not to actually touch the dogs eye because you could scratch the cornea.  This is another basic dog grooming task that you probably want to spend some time getting your dog used to because, as you can imagine, it can be a little alarming to your pet if all of a sudden you start poking around his eyes!

If you notice discharge coming from your dog's eyes that doesn't normally happen, you should get your dog to the vet right away.  This could be the sign of an eye infection and you should have it checked out so that it can get the proper treatment.

Some dogs have hair that grows in and around their eyes that gets in the way of their vision and you'll want to trim this hair with very small blunt ended scissors.  Again be extremely careful when working with scissors around your dog's eyes!
