Shampooing Your Dog

While grooming dogs is certainly a specialty that not everyone can excel at, as a pet owner you need to have some basic skills in this area in order to be able to properly care for your dog.  While you might consider yearly or twice yearly trips to the groomer, these basic skill will help you keep your dog healthy and happy in between as well as give you a chance to bond with your pet.

While some dogs love a bath, chances are that shampooing your dog is something that neither you nor your pet look forward to.  Depending on the kind of dog you have you might leave shampooing to the professional groomer but there are times when you may have to give your dog a quick bath yourself.

One important thing about bathing your dog is that you want to make sure that you have a good quality shampoo that is meant for dogs.  Human hair isn't the same as dogs hair and human shampoo isn't really that good for your dog.  You want to pick something that will be good for your dogs coat and bring out its luster and shine.

You want to assemble your equipment before you put your dog in the tub or sink.  You should invest in a good quality non slippable map so your dog doesn't slide around, some cotton for your dog's ears and a good spray nozzle so that you can get out all the shampoo.  You also want to make sure that you have a nice fluffy towel on hand to dry your pet off.

You also might want to spend some time getting your dog used to the bathing area, whether you do it outside, in the bathtub or in the sink, before you actually turn the water on.   This can be a scary experience for some dogs, but if you get them used to it gradually the process will go a lot easier for both of you from here on in.

Before you start the bathing process, you'll want to put some cotton in the dog's ears.  It's important not to get water down int the ear canal because this can cause an ear infection which will only necessitate a trip to the vet later on and can be uncomfortable for your dog.

Begin rinsing your dog down with water starting at the head and working your way down his body.  Pay close attention to the water temperature - you wouldn't want to be hosed down with freezing cold water would you?  By the same token you don't want the water to be too hot scald your pet.

Once you have your dogs coat all wet, take a little bit of shampoo and start massaging it into the coat.  Be careful not to get any in your dogs eyes but don't forget the feet, chest, stomach and anal area.  The key here is not to use too much shampoo or you can have a heck of a time trying to reset out.

Once you are done working in the shampoo, take your sprayer and spray it all out.  You have to really take your time with this and be sure that you get all the shampoo out of your dogs coat.

Finally, dry your dog off with some fluffy towels.  You might also consider blow drying your dog, especially if it is cold out and you don't want your dog walking around wet but be very careful with the blow dryer because dogs are very sensitive to the heat so you want to be sure to use only the low setting, or buy a dryer specially for dogs that won't get too hot.

Giving a dog a good bath every so often can help keep his coat shiny and clean as well as keep your pooch smelling good!
