How To Teach Your Dog To Come To You
Once you get your dog to “stay“, you need a command to get him
out of the "stay" and this is the "come" command. This
command is important because if you are out with your dog and he is
wandering off into a dangerous area or somewhere where he might get
in trouble, you can simply issue to “come” command and he will come
right back to your side.
1. Start by issuing a "stay" command for the
dog. It is imperative that he knows this command inside
and out before you can start training him to "come".
2. With the dog at the "stay" position, simply open
your arms and say come. He'll probably actually get the idea
just from your body language and come running over.
3. When he does come to you, praise him and give him
a treat.
4. You want to repeat the "stay" and "come"
commands over and over again until he seems proficient in them.
5. That was the easy part, now you need to get him
to come to you when there is something more interesting for him to
do. So take him to his favorite park or some sort of a play
area where there might be other dogs or something to pique his
interest.
6. When he starts to wander off or becomes
interested in something, issue the "come" command.
At first, your dog might not obey the command because he's used
to doing it from the stay position.
However, you need to keep after them until he comes on his own and
give him his reward. Keep practicing this and you will have a
great tool to keep your dog safe and make sure that he is at your
side when you need him to be.
